Metformin hydrochloride is a biguanide that lowers hepatic glucose production and improves peripheral insulin sensitivity without stimulating insulin secretion, so it does not cause hypoglycaemia as monotherapy. It is the foundation active in type 2 diabetes regimens.
High doses (500–1000 mg) leave little room for excipients, demanding an efficient binder and usually wet granulation to achieve compressibility.
